Marta & Stuart’s Beautiful Vineyard Wedding in Portugal
Some weddings are extra special to photograph, and Marta and Stuart’s wedding in Portugal was certainly one of them.
Marta and Stuart are good friends of mine, so being there to photograph their wedding was already a real privilege. But what made the day even more special was the strong family connection running through everything.
Marta is originally from Portugal, and the wedding brought together family and friends from different parts of their lives to celebrate with them. There was a wonderful sense of everyone being together, catching up, eating, drinking and enjoying a really special day.
And, of course, there was the incredible setting — a beautiful family-run vineyard in the Portuguese countryside.
Getting ready at the vineyard
The day began at the vineyard, with Marta and Stuart getting ready.
There was a lovely buzz around the place as everyone prepared for the wedding. With the vineyard being run by members of the family, including Marta’s cousins, it already felt like somewhere that belonged to them rather than simply being a wedding venue.
The family connection was everywhere. People were helping each other, getting things ready, sharing food and drinks, and generally enjoying the excitement of the day.
It was a brilliant way to start the wedding.
A little church in the Portuguese countryside
From the vineyard, everyone headed to a small local church just down the road for the ceremony.
The church was intimate and beautiful, and it was the perfect setting for Marta and Stuart to get married surrounded by their family and closest friends.
With Marta’s Portuguese family connections, there was a real sense of coming together and celebrating somewhere that was meaningful to her.
After the ceremony, it was back to the vineyard to continue the celebrations.
A family-run vineyard wedding
The vineyard was the perfect backdrop for the rest of the day.
Being run by the family gave the whole wedding a really personal feel. It wasn't a huge wedding venue or a polished, formal setting. Instead, it felt relaxed, welcoming and full of character.
There was plenty of food, plenty of drink and plenty of laughter.
It was exactly the sort of wedding where you could forget about the clock and just enjoy being there.
The beer wedding cake
One of the details that I absolutely loved was the wedding cake — or should I say, the lack of a traditional wedding cake!
Instead, Marta and Stuart had a beer cake.
It was such a fun and personal choice, and it fitted the day perfectly. There was no need for everything to follow the traditional wedding rulebook. This was a day that felt like Marta and Stuart.
And with a vineyard full of good food and drink, there was certainly no shortage of refreshments!
Wedding photographs amongst the vines
For the couple portraits, we headed out into the vineyard.
With rows of vines stretching out around us and the beautiful Portuguese countryside in the background, it was an incredible place to photograph Marta and Stuart together.
Because we're good friends, there was no need for things to feel overly formal or awkward. We could have a laugh, wander through the vines and take some time away from the celebrations to capture some photographs of the two of them.
The vineyard gave us such a beautiful and natural backdrop, and it felt particularly fitting that their wedding photographs were taken amongst the vines at a place so closely connected to Marta’s family.
A wedding full of family, friendship and good times
What I loved most about Marta and Stuart's wedding was how personal it felt.
From starting the day at the family vineyard, to the small local church, and then back to the vineyard for food, drinks and celebrations, the whole day felt centred around the people who mattered most to them.
There was a real sense of family throughout the day — helped by the fact that the vineyard itself is run by Marta’s cousins and family. It wasn't simply a beautiful location; it was part of the story.
Add in the Portuguese countryside, the food, the wine, the beer cake, the laughter and a brilliant group of friends and family, and you had a pretty unforgettable wedding.
Marta and Stuart, thank you for letting me be there to photograph it all. It was an absolute pleasure to celebrate with you both, and I'm very lucky to call you friends.
Congratulations!
